Laser Engraving Techniques

Behind every engraved piece from Custom Cavalry is a process — one that starts with a conversation, moves through design, and ends with a finished product you'd be proud to give or display.

Here's what actually happens between "I want something engraved" and the finished piece showing up at your door.

It Starts with the Design

Every custom order begins with what you want to say or show. That might be:

  • A name and date on a wedding gift

  • A unit crest and service dates on a military reunion piece

  • A personal message on a recovery milestone gift

  • Your organization's logo on a bulk order

If you have artwork, send it over. Vector files (SVG, AI, EPS) are preferred for the sharpest results — the laser follows vector paths precisely. High-resolution raster images (PNG or JPG at 300 DPI or higher) work too for most applications.

If you don't have artwork, we'll work with you to build something appropriate.

The Proof Step

Before anything is engraved, we send a digital proof. You see exactly what the finished piece will look like — layout, text, sizing, proportions. Nothing gets engraved until you approve the proof. This step exists because a laser cuts once — there's no undo button.

The Engraving Itself

Our laser equipment at our Independence, MO shop works differently depending on the material:

  • Glass — the laser etches the surface, creating a frosted, permanently visible finish

  • Wood — the laser burns into the grain, producing a clean charred mark that contrasts beautifully with the natural wood

  • Metal — the laser removes the top layer, leaving a deep, precise impression

  • Acrylic and leather — the laser cuts cleanly through or scores the surface for sharp, precise detailing

The depth, speed, and power of the laser pass are calibrated specifically for each material. Getting those settings right is where experience matters.

From Our Shop to Your Door

Standard orders ship in 3–5 business days after proof approval. Large bulk orders (20+ pieces) may take 7–10 business days. Rush production in 1–2 business days is available — contact us before ordering to confirm.

Local Kansas City area customers can pick up their orders by appointment at our Independence, MO location.

Whether you're ordering our custom wedding champagne glasses for an upcoming celebration or our Cavalry Stetson Display for a veteran in your life — the craftsmanship is the same on every order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What file format should I use for custom artwork?

Vector files (SVG, AI, EPS) give the sharpest results. High-resolution PNG or JPG at 300 DPI or higher also work well. We'll send a digital proof before engraving begins regardless of format.

How long does it take to get a proof?

We aim to send proofs within 1–2 business days of receiving your order and artwork. Production begins after you approve the proof.

Can you recreate a design from a photo?

In many cases, yes — contact us with your photo before ordering and we'll let you know if we can work with it and what the result will look like.
