When we run our laser over hardwood oak at Custom Cavalry's Independence, MO shop, the beam vaporizes the top layer of wood cells along the engraved path. The result is a clean, dark burn mark that's physically part of the wood — not sitting on top of it, not applied with ink or adhesive. Run your finger across it and you can feel the slight texture of the engraved surface.

The depth and contrast depend on three variables: laser power, speed, and the density of the wood grain in that exact spot. Getting those settings right for a given piece of oak is where experience matters. We've dialed ours in.
